The Delhi High Court instructed the government to provide free fares in DTC buses for Transgender

The Delhi High Court instructed the government to provide free fares in DTC buses for Transgender

BACKGROUND

In the matter of Amit Juyal V. Government of NCT of Delhi & Ors Amit Juyal, a transgender person, claimed in a contempt petition that the third gender should be given free tickets because they are economically and socially underprivileged. The Delhi government was recently approved by the Delhi High Court to deliberate on a petition calling for the recognition of transgender people as the third gender on bus tickets and free transportation for them in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses.

COURT’S CONCLUSION

A single judge bench Delhi high court Justice Arora noted that as the final option, the matter is adjourned and the government is instructed to comply with the Division Bench’s orders within one month; otherwise, the Managing Director of DTC would be summoned to court. The Division Bench’s direction is limited to taking a decision on the representation of the petitioner, so the government’s inaction and non-consideration of the same for more than six months is undoubtedly prolonged.
