Madhya Pradesh High Court Explores AI Integration in Criminal Justice System

Madhya Pradesh High Court Explores AI Integration in Criminal Justice System

Introduction:

In a pioneering move, the Madhya Pradesh High Court, under the leadership of Justice Anand Pathak in Gwalior, has begun exploring the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the criminal justice system. The court’s focus is on two key areas: using AI to interpret sign language for disabled victims and complainants, and enhancing the analysis of crime scene videography through AI. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the criminal justice system, aiming to increase efficiency and effectiveness in legal processes.

Arguments of Both Sides:

Petitioner’s Argument:

The petition highlighted the limitations of the current criminal justice system, particularly in addressing the needs of persons with disabilities and optimizing crime scene analysis. It suggested that AI could play a significant role in these areas by developing applications capable of interpreting sign language, thus improving communication between disabled victims and law enforcement. Additionally, the petition proposed that AI could enhance the analysis of crime scene videography, providing investigators with crucial insights that might otherwise be overlooked.

Respondent’s Argument:

The National Informatics Centre (NIC) responded positively to the court’s inquiries, affirming the feasibility of the proposed AI solutions. The NIC outlined the potential for AI to assist in both interpreting sign language and analyzing crime scene footage, emphasizing that these advancements could address existing deficiencies and streamline investigative processes. Furthermore, the NIC demonstrated how the SANDES App could be synchronized with the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) to improve data sharing and communication across various criminal justice departments.

Court’s Judgment:

Justice Anand Pathak expressed a keen interest in the integration of AI into the criminal justice system, recognizing its potential benefits. The court emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to utilizing AI for interpreting sign language and analyzing crime scene data. It also directed the NIC to expedite the synchronization of the ICJS with the SANDES App to facilitate better communication and data management within the justice system. The court scheduled a follow-up hearing for October 16 and instructed the Deputy Solicitor General to coordinate with relevant ministries to explore the national-level implementation of these technological advancements.
