Kerala High Court, India’s 1st HC to publish judgement in regional language

In two of its recent judgments, Kerala High Court published in its regional language bench held by Chief Justice S Manikumar and Justice Shaji P Chaly in January 2023 available on the High Court website.

The Executive and Judiciary collectively pushed the High Courts and Supreme Court to publish judgement in its regional language.

When the judgement was released by the Kerala High Court the CJI DY Chandrachud said the series of publications of judgement in their regional language had begun.

On Republic Day 1091 judgement of the top court was published in a regional language making it a first step.

A committee was constituted to translate judgements in four languages Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati, and Odia headed by Justice AS Oka beside him the other members are Justice Suraj Govindaraj of Karnataka High Court, Sharmistha from National Informatics Centre, Mitesh Kapra from IIT Delhi, Vivek Raghavan from Ek step foundation, Supriya Shankaran from Agami.

PM Modi also appreciated the moment by tweeting and said – “At a recent function, the Hon’ble CJI Justice DY Chandrachud spoke of the need to work towards making SC judgments available in regional languages. He also suggested the use of technology for it. This is a laudatory thought, which will help many people, particularly youngsters,”

Kerala High Court becomes the first court in the country to publish a judgement in a regional language.
