According to a survey by the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, only WhatsApp is highly accessible for people with disabilities (PwDs) out of the ten popular apps that were studied. Other apps include Phonepe, PayTM, Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon, Flipkart, Telegram, Uber and Ola. Out of these also, PayTM and Flipkart, in particular, have several blocking issues that need to be resolved for PwDs.
This is despite the fact that under the Right of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, every service provider in India, whether government or private, is required to make their services disabled-friendly, and that technology is used for a wide range of daily tasks nowadays.
The report suggested that websites and apps should make sure they are created in accordance with WCAG or Bureau of Indian Criteria (BIS) standards in order to establish a digital ecosystem that is truly inclusive.
