The Supreme Court issued notice on the plea by women wrestlers alleging sexual harassment

The Supreme Court today issued a notice on the petition filed by the top woman wrestlers of India seeking registration of FIR against a BJP MP as well as the wrestling federation of India’s president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for alleged sexual harassment.

Advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for the petitioners stated that the woman wrestlers are sitting in the dharna and seven women have complained and one is a minor and no FIR has been registered and this has violated the law of this court

It is alleged by the petitioner that there has been an unreasonable delay in registering the FIR especially when the wrestling bodies president have POCSO charges levelled against them.

The allegations date back to 2012 and the petitioners have been protesting against the action of taking no action at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

Meanwhile, the sports Ministry has sought a response from the wrestling federation of India.

Advocate for the petitioner claimed that there is a committee report which is not available to the public and argued that even police persons can be prosecuted for not registering an offense of this nature especially when there is an amendment to CrPC,  section 166A which allows police to also be prosecuted if the case is not registered.

The Chief Justice of India directed that the complaints that were given in sealed cover be resealed and placed under the petition

The matter is now posted for 28 May
