Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud addressed the issue of shortage of space in the Supreme Court at the Supreme Court Bar Association facilitation function for newly appointed judges.
The Supreme Court assured the Bar Association of building a new building to overcome this problem.
CJI observed that it is important to provide adequate space to the lawyers and litigants as they are in dire need of it and therefore it has been told to PWD to have adequate facilities for the Supreme Court Bar Association and for the SCAORA.
The CJI also stated that women require a space of their own so there must be adequate space for women’s bar associations.
The PWD is instructed to ensure that the entire building is air-conditioned and exploration of technical avenues are also being done to save the lawyers from terribly hot corridors.
The CJI stated that this is an area in which I am also working however I can’t promise that we will find a technological solution but we are working on it.
The CJI said that there will be waiting areas for lawyers and litigants so they don’t have to crowd up in the courts and they can sit comfortably outside the court waiting for their matter to be called on and meanwhile work on their laptops or briefs.
The Chief Justice of India reminisced when he was Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court he had taken over the setup of a new bench at Lucknow and stated that there was a little bit of his self-interest in that and when the president of the Bar Association asked him what was his interest? Then the CJI replied by saying It was much as when lawyers are occupied it is always safe for the institution.
Thus the CJI, to overcome the present issue, assured the bar of building a new building while saying that it is extremely close to his heart and we all are working on it.
