Telangana High Court Receives Report on Durgam Cheruvu Lake’s Deteriorating Condition

Introduction:

The Committee appointed by the Telangana High Court to evaluate the damage and propose solutions for the conservation of the iconic Durgam Cheruvu Lake has submitted its report. The court had taken suo moto cognizance of the lake’s deteriorating condition, responding to concerns raised in a news article titled “Durgam Cheruvu Chokes of sewage, will Hyderabad rescue its iconic lake?” In December, a committee led by Dr. Atul Narayan Vaidya was tasked with assessing the damage and recommending remedies.

Arguments of Both Sides:

The report highlighted that despite the establishment of two sewage treatment plants, a portion of sewage was still entering the lake. Construction within the Full Tank Level (FTL) and buffer zone, incomplete drainage projects, and monitoring littering through installed cameras were noted. The committee presented both short-term and long-term remedies, addressing issues like monsoon inundation, fishing, festival-related activities, illegal constructions, public awareness, and sewage management.

Court’s Judgement:

The Telangana High Court directed state authorities to review the committee’s report and propose implementation strategies. The matter is scheduled for further consideration on February 28.
