Over 4.70 crores of cases are pending in district courts according to the National Judicial Data Grid.
Over 71000 cases are pending in the supreme court. This over pendency of cases has put an enormous burden on the judicial system and government. It has led to delays in justice delivery on time to common citizens.
But this pendency of cases can be reduced by the use of smart digital technologies and digitisation of court records that will not only help judges but to practising lawyers to get access to files on time and for speedy disposal of cases.
Speaking at an event organized by the Delhi High court women lawyers forum: Role of Bar of reducing the arrears: Judicial Perspective Justice Jasmit Singh said the court needs to set a limit on no adjournment that can be granted, a maximum of three adjournments should be followed by the judges as rule. So that cases should not be extended for years.
Justice Amit said that another way to reduce the pendency of cases is to discourage the filing of revision petitions in the High Court against the order of the Magistrate . Mediation is also an option before filing the case in a higher judiciary.
The role of the Lawyer is most vital in reducing the pendency of cases. They should be clear with the client as to how much time it will take for the final disposal of the case.
