The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, recommended the appointment of five additional judges in the Madras High Court as permanent judges.
Under the collegium system, the appointment of judges is recommended by the Chief Justice of India along with four other senior judges.
The five judges are-
- Mrs. Justice Sundaram Srimathy
- Shri Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy
- Shri Justice R. Vijayakumar
- Shri Justice Mohammed Shaffiq
- Shri Justice J. Sathya Narayana Prasad
On November 22, the Supreme Court published the name mentioned above for appointment as a permanent judge, and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Governor also concurred with the recommendation.
“The Judgment Evaluation Committee, constituted in terms of the Resolution dated October 26, 2017 of the Supreme Court Collegium to assess the judgments of the above-named Additional Judges, has submitted its report. With a view to assessing the merit and suitability of the above-named Additional Judges for their appointment as Permanent Judges, the Collegium has scrutinized and evaluated the material placed on record, including the observations made by the Department of Justice in the file. Having regard to all the relevant factors, the Collegium is of the view that (1) Mrs. Justice Sundaram Srimathy, (2) Shri Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy, (3) Shri Justice R., (4) Shri Justice Mohammed Shaffiq, and Justice J. Sathya Narayana Prasad, Additional Judges, are suitable for being appointed as Permanent Judges. the resolution said.
After reviewing all of the evidence, the Supreme Court Collegium decided to recommend their appointment as permanent judges.
