Enhancing Support for Senior Citizens: Delhi High Court’s Directive on Door-to-Door Survey

Enhancing Support for Senior Citizens: Delhi High Court’s Directive on Door-to-Door Survey

Introduction:

In a recent development, the Delhi High Court issued a directive to the Chief Secretary of the Delhi Government to expedite a plea concerning the welfare of senior citizens in the national capital. The plea, filed by Sri Salek Chand Jain, advocates for the construction of new senior citizen homes in every district of Delhi and the maintenance of separate data on offenses against senior citizens by the Delhi Police.

Arguments of Both Sides:

Mr. Dinesh P. Rajbhar, representing the petitioner, highlighted the need for increased support and care for senior citizens, citing the limited number of senior citizen homes currently available in Delhi. He emphasized the neglect and discrimination faced by senior citizens within their own families, underscoring the importance of providing them with specialized care and attention. On the other hand, Mr. Vineet Dhanda, along with other counsels representing the respondents, presented their stance on the matter, addressing the logistical and administrative considerations involved in conducting a door-to-door survey and implementing measures for the welfare of senior citizens.

Court’s Judgement:

The division bench, led by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet PS Arora, directed the Chief Secretary to treat the plea as a representation and decide on it within 12 weeks. Acknowledging the pressing need to address the concerns raised by the petitioner, the court underscored the importance of expeditious action to ensure the well-being of senior citizens in Delhi.
