Introduction:
In a significant ruling, the Delhi High Court has directed the blocking of rogue websites disseminating false information about an interview involving Reliance Industries Director Anant Ambani and TV18 journalist Anand Narasimhan. The court’s decision came in response to a petition filed by CNBC TV18 and Narasimhan against websites hosting fabricated articles linking Ambani to a cryptocurrency trading platform.
Arguments of Both Sides:
CNBC TV18 and Narasimhan alleged that certain websites published fabricated articles falsely linking Ambani to a cryptocurrency trading platform, “Everix Edge,” and claiming astronomical returns through passive income. The plaintiffs argued that the articles defrauded the public by using the name, likeness, and image of Narasimhan’s interview, which was originally uploaded on CNBC TV18’s YouTube channel. They contended that the misleading articles, falsely presented as being published by the BBC, tarnished their reputation and misled the public.
Court’s Judgement:
Justice Sanjeev Narula ordered Meta and X to block and remove related Facebook posts and tweets, and provide details of the users who made these posts within four weeks. The court found merit in the plaintiffs’ case and ordered the blocking of the websites hosting the fabricated articles. Justice Narula emphasized the need to curb the spread of false information and protect the reputation of individuals and media organizations. By issuing this directive, the court upholds the principles of accountability and integrity in digital communication.
