Delhi Court Sentences Man to Four Years in 2020 Riots Case, Cites Hatred and Greed

Delhi Court Sentences Man to Four Years in 2020 Riots Case, Cites Hatred and Greed

Introduction:

A Delhi court has sentenced a man, Noor Mohammad alias Noora, to four years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with the 2020 North-East Delhi riots. The court observed that the crimes committed by Noora were driven by both “hatred and greed.” The case involved riotous acts, vandalism, arson, and robbery, highlighting the volatile atmosphere during the communal unrest.

Arguments of Both Sides:

Noora and another individual, Nabi Mohammad, were convicted earlier in FIR 221 of 2020. Noora faced charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code related to rioting, arson, and robbery, while Nabi Mohammad was convicted for robbery of mobile phones. The prosecution presented evidence of their involvement in a riotous mob that vandalized and set fire to shops, robbed individuals, and violated police orders.

Court’s Judgement:

Additional Sessions Judge Pulastya Pramachala, Karkardooma Courts, sentenced Noor Mohammad to four years in prison, with concurrent sentences for various offenses. The judge acknowledged the crimes as manifestations of both hatred and greed. Despite the severity of the offenses, the court considered the socioeconomic background of the convicts, highlighting their low-income status, lack of education, and the influence of mob sentiments. Nabi Mohammad received credit for time already spent in jail, emphasizing the lesson learned through trial and incarceration.
