Delhi Bar Council Suspends Lawyer Involved in Tis Hazari Court Shooting Incident

Firing at Tis Hazari Court 

On the Subject Based on a widely circulated video of gunfire at Tis Hazari Courts on July 5, 2023, in which numerous attorneys could be seen throwing insults and firing in the air, the Delhi Bar Council took suo motu notice. The fire reportedly occurred after a legal dispute on Wednesday in broad daylight at the Tis Hazari Court grounds. While everyone denounced such brutality, BCD moved quickly to take action.

Analysis of Bar Council Decision 

Through the authority granted to him under Rule 42 of Chapter IV of the Bar Council of Delhi Rules, Advocate Manish Sharma, Senior Vice-President of the Delhi Bar Association, was issued a letter dated 5-07-2023 suspending his right to practise law. On July 7, 2023, at 4 PM, he was asked to appear before the Delhi Bar Council and provide a written justification. The aforementioned letter also made clear that Attorney Manish Sharma could be easily recognised in the video and that efforts were being made to identify any other Attorneys who were engaged in the shooting of Tis Hazari so that the proper course of action could be taken.

Guidelines of Conduct for Lawyers and Etiquette of the Delhi Bar Council Since the actions of the attorneys seen in the aforementioned film are still under debate, it is crucial to underline the appropriate behaviour for such practising attorneys. The advocates are required to abide by a code of conduct that includes, among other things. Conduct themselves with respect and dignity; maintain a respectful demeanour towards the courts; and remember that the judicial officer’s honour is necessary for the survival of a free society.
