Allahabad High Court Orders Provision of Basic Amenities for Women at Prayagraj Police Stations

The Fact of the Case 

In the Matter of Diksha v State of UP To protect the privacy and dignity of women, a Public Interest Litigation is intended to order the State to provide essential amenities, such as toiletries, clean drinking water, enough fans, dustbins, washrooms, and bathrooms, in the police stations in Prayagraj.

Analysis of HC Verdict 

The Under Secretary, Home, Government of Uttar Pradesh was instructed to produce an affidavit outlining the progress made in the allocation of money and other essential actions that were taken on the issue by the division bench of Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Gajendra Kumar of the Allahabad high court.

The Court noted a similar PIL filed in Anjali Pandey v. State of U.P in which the State claimed that effective measures had been taken by appointing the agency responsible for building women’s restrooms in the appropriate police stations. The petitioners’ complaint, according to the court, is that despite assurances, there has been little to no movement to date, and the state government has still not taken any concrete action to build toilets for women at the appropriate police stations around the State. The Bench scheduled a hearing on both cases for July 17, 2023. instructed the Under Secretary of Home for the Government of Uttar Pradesh to submit an affidavit detailing the progress made in allocating monies and other essential actions that were taken on the issue.
