Recently, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that the Supreme Court of India would soon release a legal lexicon of unsuitable gendered terminology. He stated that the lexicon was a project he began a few years ago and was nearing completion.
“Unless we are open about these facets, it will be difficult for us to evolve as a society,” said Justice Chadrachud.
Judge Chandrachud called attention to the usage of derogatory language against women in court proceedings, in a speech given to celebrate belated Women’s Day. He further stated that the list was not intended to disparage judges, but rather to help everyone comprehend “our problems with the mind.” These, he claimed, were preconceived conceptions, biases, and other things.
He said that the lexicon was created by a commission chaired by Calcutta High Court Judge Moushumi Bhattacharya. Justice Prathiba M. Singh of the Delhi High Court, former judges Prabha Sridevan and Gita Mittal, and Jhuma Sen, Advocate, Calcutta High Court and Supreme Court, and adjunct faculty member at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences in Kolkata, were also involved in the creation of the glossary.
